Visiting China Tips and advice

Handy Tips for Traveling in China ✈️🇨🇳

  1. Grab a local SIM card right away.
You’ll need one for almost everything. Since it requires ID verification, it’s easiest to get it at an airport service center—having a Chinese friend with you helps a lot. Once you have a SIM, downloading and registering apps will be a breeze.
  2. A VPN is your best friend.
Want to check Instagram, Google, or other sites you normally use? Get a VPN before you arrive.
  3. Cash vs. mobile payments.
Most people in China use WeChat Pay or Alipay for literally everything—from street food to train tickets. Still, it’s smart to carry some RMB cash, just in case. With a SIM card, you can link your account and pay like a local.
  4. Hungry? Try the delivery apps.
Meituan and Ele.me are the go-to platforms for food delivery. Or you can browse restaurants on Meituan and just go there to eat.
  5. Planning your sightseeing.
Locals love using Xiaohongshu (a.k.a. Little Red Book) for travel tips and recommendations. Ctrip (Trip.com) is also super handy for booking tickets and hotels.
  6. Getting around.
Download Didi Chuxing—it’s basically China’s Uber. Just type in your start and end points and you’re set.
  7. Shopping made easy.
Need snacks, clothes, or literally anything? Try Taobao, JD.com, or Pinduoduo—they’ll even deliver to your hotel.
  8. Traveling long distance.
For trains, you’ll need the official 12306 app. For flights, just use the airline apps.
  9. Don’t expect much English.
Most locals don’t speak English, so don’t be surprised. A quick hack: type what you want to say into ChatGPT or a translation app and show it to people—it works like magic.
  10. Nighttime vibes.
Chinese cities are safe, even after dark. Feel free to wander around and enjoy the nightlife without worry.
  11. Budget check.
China isn’t always as cheap as people think—especially at touristy spots. Some prices are now similar to Europe or the US.

Final tip: In China, almost everything is done through apps. If you ever run into trouble, head to the nearest police station—they’re usually friendly and helpful.
